On being a gentleman
It's Friday once again. And the two readers for this blog know what usually means. Yep, it's silly internet quiz time again. I found this quiz particularly interesting because of some of the statements it provided. They seemed to be things or values from a past era. Things like you never ask a woman her age and you never talk religion or politics at the table. I actually grew up on things like that. Given the current lack of manners and civility overall in society today, there are days I think that my generation was the last one to be taught some manners and behavior in the home. But let us not go there today. 88% though, I have to wonder why not higher? Then again, I am only willing to go so far. . .

I am pretty much of the same generation as you and I notice a lot of people younger than me are quite well-mannered and conversely that rather a lot of people older than me are rather rude (except they get to disguise it as 'grumpy' or 'curmudgeonly').
I am Australian but I think we have very similar cultures that are experiencing similar changes transmitted quickly by mass media and the like.
As a school teacher at one point, I could tell right away whether the parents had any manners or not by looking at their kids. Parent conferences came, and if little Johnny was a rude little brat, all I had to do was look to the parents to know why. And yes, there are some older folks who are extremely rude (and use the curmudgeon as an excuse).
So, I can agree to an extent, but here at least, not that many parents seem to be doing their jobs very well.
