Booknote: Star Wars: Captain Phasma (graphic novel)

This comic series picks up where The Force Awakens film leaves off. At the end of the film (spoilers for whoever the heck has not seen this nor read about it), Phasma is forced at gunpoint to lower Starkiller Base's shields so the Resistance (basically the Rebellion in this iteration) can destroy it. She is thrown into a garbage compactor, but she manages to escape. As she is attempting to escape the base, she gets on a computer terminal to erase evidence of her entering the codes to lower the shields. She notices someone else logged in before her, so they may know her role. It's time for her to eliminate loose ends. The rest of the story is her chasing after that one loose end.

The story is a fairly fast paced read. Phasma is a character we barely see in the film, so we get a bit more insight into her character. It is just a bit of insight; she still remains mysterious and as ruthless as ever.

The story is good, but it is not great. It clearly is filler between the two movies. The really good element in this comics series is the art. The art is well done, very colorful, with  a lot of attention to detail. The art really makes the story look better. The art is a good reason to pick this up.

Overall, this is a volume to borrow. For libraries, if you already collect Star Wars comics,  you may want to consider adding this one to your collection. In the end, I liked it.

3 out of 5 stars.
