I continue reading the Garth Ennis run on The Punisher comics. This volume includes the following stories:

  • Mother Russia (issues 13-18). Nick Fury gets Frank Castle to bring back a lethal virus hidden in a Russian missile silo. The issue is that the virus is inside a young innocent girl, and others want the virus by any means necessary.
  • Up is Down and Black is White (issues 19-24). Nicky Cavella does something unthinkable to lure the Punisher out in order to kill him. When Castle goes on a predictable rampage as a result of Cavella's actions, Cavella's plan may end up backfiring on him with serious violence. Cavella will learn the hard way that there are lines you do not cross.
  • The Slavers (issues 25-30). Castle goes up against ruthless sex traffickers. To complicate things, a corrupt cop in the traffickers' pocket somehow convinces his superiors to launch a full campaign against Castle, falsely accusing Castle of beating up cops, something everyone knows Castle does his best to avoid.

As in the previous volume, the action is fast paced, intense, and violent. There are some gruesome moments; this is not a series for the faint of heart. If you like action with a touch of violence and retribution, this may be for you.  The Slavers story can be moving at times, and it shows the side of Castle acting for the sake of the innocent. The stories draw you in, and you just keep on reading. For the most part, the stories can stand on their own, but there are references to events in previous stories.

The art continues to be a great reason to pick up the series. It is very good. In addition, the photo realistic covers capture Castle's character well.

Overall, I continue to like this gritty dark series, and I will look for the next volume.

5 out of 5 stars.
