Deck Review: Moon Magic Cards

Moon Magic Book and Card Deck. London, UK: Arcturus Publishing, (year unknown). ISBN: 9781398805583. (Hate using Amazon's link but publisher website is next to useless, not sure it is even up to date, and not searchable.)

Genre: oracle cards
Subgenre: moon, magic
Format: 50-card deck with trade paperback
Source: I own this one. Found it on sale at Half Price Books

This deck kit includes a 50-card deck and a full companion book. The publisher states the cards can be used for card readings, meditation, and magical work.

The book is arranged as follows:

  • Introduction. The author describes the deck's concept in two pages. They mention a bit how oracles work and using the card readings as a guide.
  • Chapter 1: The Magic of the Night. This chapter goes over the magic of the night, the night sky cathedral as a sacred space, a word on night owls, and the lunar cycle. The phases of the Moon are explained briefly and how they may work with your magic.
  • Chapter 2: Silver Lady of the Moon. Starts going over the Triple Goddess concept. It then provides a brief overview of various lunar goddesses.
  • Chapter 3: A Glimmering of Magic. This chapter gives a few small spells you can try out with the cards. It also describes briefly some divination methods other than cards.
  • Chapter 4: Moon Castings. This chapter goes over cartomancy and using the cards. It includes 5 card spreads you can try out. We also get a brief note on doing intuitive readings.
  • Chapter 5: The Moon Magic Cards. This chapter has the card entries. Entries include a small color image of the card, card name and number, keywords, and interpretations.

The book overall is informative and easy to read. It covers a good amount of lunar related details. For some topics, such as pendulums, you may need a supplemental text or two, but otherwise you get enough to get you going. The spells are relatively simple. A nice touch is that the book pages have a colored border for each chapter.

The deck is nice overall. The images are selected from Shutterstock. The images are simple and relatively straightforward. You could read the cards intuitively, and I was able to do it. Still, I strongly recommend reading the book, especially the card entries. As the publisher suggests, the cards work well for meditation. As I often do with oracle decks, I first used these cards for a weekly card draw, and they worked well. I feel this deck can work well with some darker Tarot decks. I'll need to explore this further.

The cards measure about 4 3/4  inches by 2 3/4 inches. The cards have a soft matte finish, and they shuffle with ease. The deck features a good selection of images. The card back art depicts the Moon phases. It is nice, but it is not reversible. The book does not include reversals. All in all, you can use the deck year round, but I feel it may be more of a fall or better yet a winter deck.

In the end, I really like this one.

4 out of 5 stars.
