This is the first volume of a Star Wars comics series centered on Darth Vader. After the destruction of the Death Star in the Battle of Yavin, the Emperor is displeased with Vader, who happens to be one of the few survivors. To humiliate Vader, the Emperor makes Vader a subordinate to General Tagge (fans may remember him as the guy arguing against the Death Star in the conference room scene in the Episode IV film). To add to the humiliation, Vader also gets a new adjutant officer who is really assigned to Vader to keep tabs on him. Most annoying, but Vader perseveres with his own plans as well as doing the Emperor's bidding. You can't keep the Dark Lord of the Sith down.
The stories are good. Once I started reading I just kept on going. The art is excellent; it pays attention to detail, and it brings the Star Wars universe to life. We get to see things from the Imperial side, specifically Vader's view. Sure, he is the villain, but we can't help but sympathize with him at times.
This is definitely a series fans need to pick up. It has good story, great art, and it is entertaining. I often worry about Star Wars now that it is under the Disney regime, but in this case, they've actually put out a good piece of quality work. Highly recommended.
5 out of 5 stars.
