Reading Challenges for 2023

I completed the two reading challenges I started in 2022. I kept things easy given the uncertainties of the Hard Times we are in. I am going to keep things fairly easy this year too given the Hard Times and the pandemic continue in 2023. An issue for me doing these reading challenges is checking in. I can usually read the books for the challenges, but remembering to check in tends to be the real challenge for me. We will see how it works out this year.

This year I am keeping it simple. I am doing the two reading challenges I did in 2022, and I am adding one I have done before for a total of three.

Mount TBR Challenge for 2023

I always have books I own that I need to read, so this challenge helps me with that. Last year I managed to complete the challenge, so I am hoping to do it again this  year. Check the link above for details on the challenge. I am committing for the lowest level, which is 12 books for Pike's Peak. Last year I read one extra book, so I am hoping I can do a bit more than 12, but I am not sure I can 24 books for Mount Blanc. I noticed the rules allow for ARCs, as long as you have them prior to January 1st, so I may be able to use some of those on this challenge too. For now, I am going with 12 books.

12 Books = Pike's Peak

Books read for the Mount TBR Challenge:

  1. Hagar the Horrible: Happy Hour.
  2. Hagar the Horrible: Sacking Paris on a Budget.
  3. Death Note, Volume 2: Confluence.
  4. Wisdom of Avalon Oracle Cards (kit with book).
  5. The First Heretic; Fall to Chaos (Horus Heresy, Book 14).
  6. Hagar Hits the Mark
  7. Green Oracle Cards (kit with book).
  8. Steampunk Tarot: Wisdom from the Gods of the Machine (kit with book).
  9. Angels and Ancestors Oracle Cards (kit with book).
  10. Hagar the Horrible: Motley Crew
  11. The Zombie Tarot
  12. I, Strahd: Memoirs of a Vampire
  13. Art Through the Eyes of the Soul Oracle (kit with book).
  14. Celtic Wisdom Oracle (kit with book).
  15. Celtic Tarot (Hughes and Down) (kit with book).
  16. Tarot V (kit with book).
  17. Kuan Yin Oracle (kit with book).
  18. Dark Mirror Oracle (kit with book).
  19. The Mammoth Book of Zombie Comics
  20. Raven's Prophecy Tarot (kit with book).
  21. Trick Or Treat Tarot (kit with book).
  22. William King, The Space Wolf Omnibus (Warhammer 40000).
  23. Serena Valentino, Undead: Everything the Modern Zombie Needs to Know
  24. Tai Chi Reflections (deck kit with book).

Update (8/1/2023): With I, Strahd I complete my initial challenge commitment. This is the first year I manage to complete it before the end of the year. I still have some time, so will see how far I can make it.

Update (11/22/2023): I am now four books away from the Mont Blanc level, 24 books from the TBR pile. I have at least one more review to post, so in reality three more. We'll see how December goes and whether I make it up a level or not. One thing that helped me this year are cartomancy decks that come with a good book since I do read those books, so I can count them.

Update (12/30/2023): With the Tai Chi Reflections set, I made it to 24 books from the TBR pile. This means I managed to go up a level in the challenge to Mount Blanc (24 books read and reviewed). This is double the amount of what I usually manage, and I am sure some of it was the companion book some cartomancy decks had. That is fine, a book is a book. I hope to do the challenge again in 2024, though I am not sure I can repeat the feat. We'll see.

The NetGalley/Edelweiss Challenge for 2023

I always have titles I need to read from NetGalley and Edelweiss, so doing this challenge gets me to do some of those. I committed to 10 books for the Bronze Level, and I read 14. I am hoping I can read a bit more than that, but I am keeping to the initial commitment of 10 books. If I make it to the next level, I will upgrade.

Bronze Level = 10 books

Books read for NetGalley/Edelweiss Challenge for 2023:

  1. Lady Mechanika, Volume 1: The Mystery of the Mechanical Corpse.
  2. The Cimmerian, Volume 4
  3. Knock 'Em Dead.
  4. 2000 AD Encyclopedia.
  5. Your Tarot Toolkit: Simple Activities for your Daily Practice.
  6. Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II
  7. Armorclads
  8. Hotel Scarface
  9. I Breathed a Body
  10. Zen Wisdom for the Anxious
  11. The Book Lover's Guide to London.

Update (5/30/2023): I completed my initial commitment for this with 11 books. I will keep reading and see if I can make the next level.

Audiobook Challenge for 2023
(link to their sign up page)

I did not read any audiobooks in 2022, so I decided to add this challenge again in 2023. I think I can find some audiobooks via Hoopla. I am committing to the initial level of Newbie for 1-5 books. This should be an easy challenge since I can complete it with just one book, but I am hoping to get at least five.

Newbie = 1-5 books.

Books read for the Audiobook Challenge:0

Update (11/16/2023). I just could not get into this challenge this year. I was not really able to find a book in audio I wanted to read nor the time to actually listen to it.  So I am just calling it off as incomplete for this year. Not sure I will try it again next year.

 Reading Challenge Addict

Finally, I do the Reading Challenge Addicts to summarize the challenges I am doing and keep me accountable.  I am doing the Easy as Pie level which is 1-5 challenges entered and completed.

Easy as Pie = 1-5 challenges entered and completed

(Update note 11/16/2023). Well, I managed to complete this with two out of the three reading challenges I chose to attempt completed.
